The control of an opposed hydraulic free piston engine
نویسندگان
چکیده
An opposed hydraulic free piston engine is under design at the Tianjin University in China because of the advantages of this engine compared to the conventional engine. The main challenges presented by such engines are the control of the piston motion and synchronization. This study investigates the fundamental control context and control method of the opposed hydraulic free piston engine using an AMESim simulation model. The responses of the engine to force disturbance and setpoint change are studied using proportional–integral–derivative (PID) controller, simplified energy equation feedforward and grey model-modified energy equation feedforward. Grey model-modified energy equation feedforward, along with PID, is found to provide satisfactory response performances in piston position control. Synchronization is also discussed, and an acceptable synchronization performance is found to be achievable. The results of hardware-in-the-loop testing show that the control strategy works and that the controller is stable. 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

An Investigation on the Effects of Gas Pressure Drop in Heat Exchangers on Dynamics of a Free Piston Stirling Engine
This paper is devoted to study the effects of pressure drop in heat exchangers on the dynamics of a free piston Stirling engine. First, the dynamic equations governing the pistons as well as the gas pressure equations for hot and cold spaces of the engine are extracted. Then, by substituting the obtained pressure equations into the dynamic relationships the final nonlinear dynamic equations gov...

The goal of this project is to provide a compact and efficient fluid power source for mobile applications (10 kW-500 kW), including on-road vehicles and off-road heavy machineries. This is achieved through the development of a hydraulic free-piston engine (HFPE). Previously, a virtual crankshaft mechanism is proposed by the authors which regulates the pistons to follow any reference trajectorie...

In this paper a mathematical simulation of a simplified internal combustion engine is presented. To contribute engine kinematics and its geometry, simple relations are derived for constrained motions. The equation of motion for the piston forms a singular boundary value problem. The uniqueness of the solution was studied in the Banach space. For solving governing equations an iterative numerica...
